Radon is a radioactive gas that is naturally produced in the ground from the small amount of uranium present in rock and soil and it is more intense in places where there is concentrated bedrock. Radon produces tiny radioactive particles as it decays and when these particles are inhaled they are deposited in airways and lung tissues which can lead to a radiation dose which can lead to lung cancer.

The risk of developing cancer is dependent on how much radiation you have been exposed to as well as how long you were exposed to it.

Radon has been classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Group of Cancer Research on Cancer (a part of the WHO), which is in the same group as asbestos and tobacco smoke.
